Mia:                                                                                                                                        Symbolism of Name:                                                                                                                                              Mia is Francesca’s mother in the book Saving Francesca.  Her name is Italian and has the meaning ‘mine’.  In the novel this symbolises how Mia has many people around her when she is going through depression who all think of her as their own.  Mia also is given the names mum and mummy by her children, giving their own name to their mother makes them feel as if she is still theirs.  As if she belongs to them.

Speech:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Within the novel Mia has very short and sweet conversations.  While she is in depression Mia finds it hard to communicate with family and friends, it also takes up a lot of effort for her, it strains her energy levels.

One of the people that Mia finds it easier to communicate with Jimmy Hailler, one of the boys that Francesca goes to school with.  When she is around him her conversation flows better, even though they are talking about Mia’s work at the university.

Appearance:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    In the novel Saving Francesca Mia is the mother.  Her daughter Francesca describes Mia at the start of the novel as a bright bubbly person who would wear smart, office looking clothes to her work at the University.  Around the home the reader can guess that she wears a simple style of clothing that is easy for her to preform her house duties and go out with the family.

Once in depression we are told by Francesca that her mother, Mia, stays around the house in her dressing gown.  Not going out and getting dressed up but just staying home in her bed clothes.            While in depression her physical appearance changes too.  Mia starts to get bad bags around her eyes.  Her face starts to look drawn, old and sick.  Physically she starts to change she starts to look unwell and not healthy.  Even though she may have not lost weight she looks skinnier in away that makes everyone worry.  Altogether Mia’s appearance changes from young to old in a very short amount of time.

Francesca:                                                                                                                                                                              Symbolism of Name:                                                                                                                                                                             In the book Saving Francesca, Francesca has a variety of names, for example Frankie, Fran and Francis.  Different people had different names for her because she acts like a different person in front of them.  Her persona changes according to whom she is relating to. (egs Mia, her mother, Robert, her father, Luca, William, Ms Quinn, Justine and her friends.)

Her original name, Francesca is Italian and also French.  Francesca’s name means ‘to be free’.  This symbolises what Francesca wants to be –free, but she can not be because she feels tied down by her family, friends, and school.  She has these feelings towards them because it’s as if they are forcing her to do things but not telling her what’s happening.

Speech:                                                                                                                                                                                             Francesca uses informal language, anything that is easy and quick to say.  At times she is known to murmur short and  smart comments, that she hopes no one will hear but people around her do.

Appearance:                                                                                                                                                                             Francesca is 16 years old teenager who is attending year 11 at St Sebastian’s College.  In the novel the writer doesn’t introduced how Francesca dresses but from the way her character reacts and comes across it is shown that she wears the appropriate clothing for school such as a school uniform.  The reader can then guess that while she is around home she wears anything that is easy and just puts anything on, not caring how she looked.

Actions:                                                                                                                                                                                       Reacting To Other People:        In the book Saving Francesca the main character Francesca goes through so tough problems which makes her react to all the different people she comes to face with differently.  Some she can stand but others she can’t.  While her mother is in depression Francesca finds it hard to be around her father.  She thinks at the start that he is the one that caused all this but towards the end she sees that she was wrong in thinking this and that she was just scared.  Whenever they are around each other they constantly fight and are at each others head.

Towards her mother she feels hurt and tries her best to act happy and strong around her but sometimes it shows through that she is hurting and wants her mother back.  Most of the time she will try to stay clear of her mum so she doesn’t have to feel the hurt and pain Mia is going through.

When Francesca is around her brother, Luca, she does the big sister thing for him.  She loves to muck around with him and make him happy.  She enjoys spending time with him and making him happy.  With everything happening at home she doesn’t want to be separated from her brother.  She makes sure he is ok all the time and looks out for him.  She would do anything for Luca.

A once quiet all boys private boarding school is the scene set in the film Dead Poets Society.  Until an ex-student returns to teach English Poetry classes to a group of boys.  This captivating and dramatic film shows emotions from teenage boys who are feeling pressured by their parents to go far in life.  First showing the boys returning from their holidays and going to their first school assembly for the year.

The main character is a teacher played by Robin Williams.  He plays his character well as if he were one of the students too.  Compared to other film that Williams have been in this one takes him to another level.  His main role is to teach the boys freedom within themselves and in society.  He teaches this through poetry and what the boys are interested in.

One of the main problems most of the boys in the film face is their parents.  For the time this movie is set in parents are forcing their children to chose a career that they wish for them to do.  The boys find this hard on them and through the movie we learn how the boys move away from what their parents want of them and see the problems that they face will trying to do this.  Emotions, physical problems and a heap more are shown throughout this film.

A moving quote for the film, “Carpe Diem! Seize the Day.  Make your live extrodinary.” it is apart of what the boys moved on to change their lives.  This is one of the main points that show what they are going to do throughout the film.
